We cannot limit Karbala with the sacred teaching of Islam only. This event was designed for humanity.
It based this occurrence on the fight between good and evil.
After the Holy Prophet(PBUH), the Holly Ahlebait was in constant threat of death.
Ummayads wanted the rule of Arabs even before the Holy Prophet. The intrigues of Omayyads faded before the dominating personality of Holly Prophet. They also started the conspiracies just after the Holy Prophet at Sakifa.
Yazid was of the view that his illegal, unnatural, and immoral tyrant kingship would never flourish in the presence of Hazrat Hussain. Hazrat Imam Hussain was the contestant against his so-called khilafat. Majority of the people were against the rule of Yazid. They were of the view that Imam Hussain was the best suitable candidate for the Caliphate. Hazrat Imam Hussain had direct guidance from the Holy Prophet, and Ummah desperately needed such a leader to flourish. Muslims from the whole territory needed a leader like Hussain.
The event of Karbala was not an accident. It was a pre-planned destination of Yazid. According to Yazid, the biggest threat to his throne were the members of Ahlebait. They also subjected Hazrat Imam Hassan to poisoning with the same pursuit. They used every tool to pressurize Ahlebait.
The Battle of Karbala was fought on 10 October 680 (10 Muharram in the year 61 AH of the Islamic calendar) between the army of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid I and a small army led by Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, at Karbala Iraq.

Yazid was forcibly throned in April 680 as a second Caliph of Umayyad. Hussain never accepted the rule of Yazid. It was the history of the people of Kufa to remain averse against the Syria-based Umayyad rule. They had an attachment with Hazrat Ali, the father of Imam Hussain. The people of Kufa invited Hussain to dethrone Yazid at any cost. They wrote several thousand letters to show their sympathy with him.
The unnatural event of Karbala leads to the massive agitation in the shape of revolt the Muslim Empire. The atrocities with the family of Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) was intolerable for the true Muslims. This was the start of the Second Civil War in the Muslim Empire. The people of Iraq organized two separate revolutionary campaigns against Yazid. The blood of Hussain and his family along with the innocent martyrs was the provoking spirit for the Muslims. The Penitents and Mukhtar al-Thaqafi led the revolution against the tyrant rule of Yazid.
It was natural that people were feeling insecure after the cruelty with the blood relatives of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). No person could not escape from the cruel clutches of Yazid. The acts of Yazid and Shimr have become a symbol of utmost cruelty. Hussain became the symbol of love, peace, humanity, and brotherhood. Even the non-Muslims adore Hussain because of His leadership.
Philosophy of Karbala By Hussain
Imam Hussain, through the event of Karbala, gave a message to the world that life is nothing with no Moto and ideology. A person should have defined rules for his life. The rules of life of a person should accord to the specific ideology. Life should be without fear of any person. Life and death is only in the hands of Almighty Allah. One should never bow before the power as ultimate power rests in the hands of Almighty Allah. Everyone has to die and no one can live more than his fate and destiny. We should deal life and death of any person with utmost dignity. A dignified death is better than a shameful life. A person should be pious and have the passion and courage to stand against the evils. Yazid was the representative of evil. While, Hussain became the symbol of sacrifice, sacrifice, and dignity for the rest of the world.
The succession of Yazid In 676AH was an unprecedented event in the history of Islam. All the Caliphs were chosen through open Majlis e Shura. The Muslims had distinguished dignified personalities like
- Imam Husayn,
- Abd Allah ibn Al-Zubair,
- Abd Allah ibn Umar and
Abd Al-Rahman Ibn Abi Bakr to be selected a Caliph of Muslims.
They all had their strong claim to contest for Caliphate against Yazid.
Fitzpatrick and Walker view on Yazid Succession
Yazid’s succession is widely considered as an “anomaly in Islamic history”. Earlier the Islamic government was based on “consultative” form. But after the succession of Yazid, the government transformed into a monarchy.
A Tribute To Imam Hussain.
Imam Hussain was the grandson of the last Prophet Hazrat Mohammad(As). After the prophets he is the personality who has made the history of mankind. He is the younger son of the fourth Caliph of Muslim Hazarat Ali (karam Ullah wajhu). Hazrat Ali is remembered due to his bravery and is the real cousin of Hazrat Mohammad(As). The elder Son of Hazrat Imam Hussain is Hazrat Imam Hassan.
Hazrat Imam Hussain is the son of Hazrat Mohammad (AS) beloved Hazrat Fatima.
After the worldly Holy disappearance of Hazrat Mohammad(As), the Muslim Ummah was facing constant difficulties. Khulfaye Rashedeen ( Hazrat Abu Bakar, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Usman, Hazrat Ali, Hazrat Imam Hassan – a period of 30 years), the life threat to the members of Ahlebait constantly increased. Imam Hussain was the leader to be elected as a Khalifa. The Umayyads led in the leadership of Yazid was willing to get the consent of Hazrat Hussain at any cost. This was the time when Imam Hussain came with a spirit of Martyrdom. He stood against the throne of Yazid and told the world that the eternal life only lies in the spirit of ideology.
Yazid had been told that Imam Hussain would never surrender under the kingship of Yazid. During the reign of Hazrat Usman some devilish characters came into power like Marwan bin Hakam. He was also responsible for the martyrdom of Hazrat Usman. He used the stamp of Khalifa on a letter to kill the protestants, which resulted in the demise of Hazrat Usman later.
Marwan bin Hakam was in the good books of Yazid due their mutual negative policies against Islam. While Yazid was in Syria he ordered Walid Bin Utba, the Governor Of Medina to get BAIT in favour of Yazid as Khalifa. According to them, Hazrat Imam Hussain, Abdullah bin Zubair, Abdullah bin Umar and Mohammad Bin ABI Bakar were a danger to the throne of Yazid. Walid consulted with Marwan bin Hakam in the matter. Marwan was the Naib Governor, and he advised him to kill all of them if they deny with the orders of Yazid. He also advised to take the oath forcibly. Walid Called for Hazrat Imam Hussain. Hazrat Imam Hussain was already in the knowledge of the designs of Yazid and his colleagues.
There were exchange of hard words between Marwan and Imam Hussain as he refused to comply with their ill-will desires. Now Imam Hussain realised that the Yazid and his party were ready for any type of bloodshed in the Holy city of Medina.
The next day Hazrat Imam Hussain left for Makka for offering Hajj. Hajj is the most Holy event for the Muslims, but the Yazidis left no option to pressurize Ahlebait to take oath for Yazid as Khalifa. They had planned to kill Imam Hussain during the rituals of Hajj even. It was the time when Imam Hussain decided to leave Makkah for any inevitable bloodshed.
Hazrat Imam Hussain had already sent Hazrat Muslim Bin Aqeel to get oath from the people of Kufa. The people of Kufa had send numerous letters to Hazrat Imam Hussain to come and announce himself as a Khalifa of Muslims. So, on .. He left Makkah with small crew of less the 100 people including women and children.
As Imam Hussain reached near Karbala, he was informed that Hazrat Muslim Bin Akeel has been martyred by Ibne Saad, the Governor of kufa. This was the time when the whole responsibility of the Muslim Ummah came on the shoulders of Imam Hussain.
